The conjunction that introduces the protasis is normally SE (if) which can have more formal alternatives like: qualora, laddove, ammesso che, purché, nell’ipotesi che/in cui, nel caso che/in cui,caso mai, a condizione che, a patto che, nell’eventualità che, etc.; which all take the subjunctive.
- Lo faremmo volentieri, nel caso in cui voi ci offriste una reale collaborazione.
- We would be happy to do so if you offered us real collaboration.
- Supposto che non avessimo avuto alcun contrattempo, avremmo senz’altro rispettato l’impegno.
- Laddove fossero loro a richiederlo, non avremmo nulla da obiettare.
- Assuming we had not had any setbacks, we would certainly have respected our commitment.
- Qualora ci avessero avvertito in tempo, avremmo certamente partecipato anche noi.
- If they had warned us in time, we would certainly have participated too.
The condition (protasis) can also be expressed by a verb in the gerund, participle or infinitive.
- Continuando con questo ritmo, non sarà possibile finire il lavoro (se continuiamo…)
- Continuing at this pace, it will not be possible to finish the job (if we continue…)
- Volendo, si potrebbe anche fare (se vogliamo/se si vuole/se si volesse…)
- If we wanted, we could also do it (if we want/if we want/if we wanted…)
- Ci rivedremo l’anno prossimo, a Dio piacendo (se piace a Dio…)
- We’ll see each other again next year, God willing (God willing…)
- Superato l’esame, tutto diventerà più facile (se supererò/se supererai…)
- Once you pass the exam, everything will become easier (if I pass/if you pass…)
- A dar retta a lui, non ci sarebbero difficoltà (se dessimo retta/se si desse…)
- If we listened to him, there would be no difficulty (if we listened/if we listened…)
Sometimes the hypothetical period presents itself as elliptical, that is, without either the condition or the consequence (which however can be easily reconstructed based on the context).
- Ah, se avessi tanti soldi!… (farei tante cose)
- Ah, if I had a lot of money!… (I would do many things)
- Quasi quasi prenderei un gelato… (se tu me l’offrissi)
- I would almost get an ice cream… (if you offered it to me)
- Se ti decidessi finalmente a lavorare… (sarebbe proprio ora)
- If you finally decided to work… (it would be right now)
- Se me l’avessi detto… (ne avrei tenuto conto)
- If you had told me… (I would have taken it into account)
Sometimes the condition can only be expressed by a complement.
- In situazioni diverse (se si fossero verificate situazioni diverse) la cosa si sarebbe risolta con facilità.
- In different situations (if different situations had occurred) the matter would have been resolved easily.
- Tu, al mio posto (se fossi stato in me), cosa avresti fatto?
- You, in my place (if you were me), what would you have done?
