Other demonstrative adjectives are less used like stesso, medesimo and tale.
1. Stesso – Medesimo (same)
Stesso and Medesimo indicate identity or similarity and also repetition. “Stesso” can express a reinforcing value of identity (in this case it is placed after the pronoun and, sometimes, after the name). “medesimo” is less frequently used.
- Dice sempre le stesse cose.
- He always says the same things.
- Legge sempre i medesimi articoli.
- He always reads the same articles.
- Gli stessi dipendenti non erano d’accordo.
- The employees themselves did not agree.
- Gli studenti stessi giudicavano negativamente quel professore.
- The students themselves judged that professor negatively.
- Ci sono dovuta andare io stessa.
- I had to go there myself.
- Me l’ha comunicato il direttore stesso (in persona /proprio lui).
- The director himself (himself) told me this.
- Tu stesso l’hai ammesso.
- You yourself admitted it.
- Sei sempre lo stesso! Sei sempre il medesimo!
- You are still the same! You are always the same!
- “Chi è il tuo medico?” “Sempre lo stesso”
- “Who is your doctor?” “Always the same”
2. Tale
Equivalent to questo questa, quello / quella, simile etc.
- Fatta tale/questa premessa, iniziò la conferenza.
- Having made this premise, the conference began.
- Non dire tali stupidaggini /stupidaggini come queste!
- Don’t say such nonsense like this!
- Chi ha fatto una tale affermazione / un’affermazione del genere?
- Who made such a statement?
- Saputa tale notizia/una simile notizia, piombò nel silenzio.
- Having heard this news, he fell into silence.
Tale is also an indefinite adjective/pronoun.
- Mi hai messo una tale paura addosso!
- You put such fear in me!
- Un tale mi disse di essere stato in Africa!
- A guy told me he had been to Africa!
- Un tal Rossi si è avvicinato alla macchina!
- A certain Rossi approached the car!
Demonstrative adjectives and pronouns can be strengthened by locative adverbs qui/qua/lì/là.
- Questo bimbo qua fa i capricci.
- This child here is having a tantrum.
- Non questa rivista, ma quella là, per favore!
- Not this magazine, but that one, please!
- “Qual è il mio posto?” “Questo qui!”
- “What is my place?” “This here!”
- Quel libro lì, di chi è?
- Whose book is it by?
Demonstrative and possessive adjectives can also be combined.
- Ma dove sei andato a pescare queste tue idee?
- But where did you go to get these ideas of yours?
- Questo suo continuo insistere mi disturba molto.
- This constant insistence of yours disturbs me a lot.
