The conditional can be found in the following dependent clauses:

1. OBJECTIVE (after an enunciation)

  • Penso che sarebbe meglio andare a casa.
  • I think it would be better to go home.
  • Credo che avremmo fatto meglio andare al cinema.
  • I think we would have been better off going to the cinema.

2. INDIRECT QUESTIONS

  • Gli studenti si chiedono che cosa potrebbero fare.
  • Students wonder what they could do.
  • Il bambino non sapeva quando il padre sarebbe arrivato.
  • The child did not know when his father would arrive.
  • L’architetto voleva verificare se il calcolo sarebbe stato (futuro rispetto al verbo reggente passato) esatto.
  • The architect wanted to check whether the calculation would be (future with respect to the past governing verb) correct.

3. CAUSAL

  • Non sono del tutto d’accordo con lui, perché gli avvenimenti si sarebbero svolti in tutt’altro modo.
  • I don’t entirely agree with him, because events would have unfolded in a completely different way.
  • Mi dispiace tanto, perché avrei da darvi una brutta notizia.
  • I’m so sorry, because I have some bad news to give you.

4. CONSECUTIVE

  • Ero così stanco che mi sarei buttato per terra a dormire.
  • I was so tired I would have thrown myself on the floor to sleep.
  • È talmente opportunista che rinnegherebbe persino sua madre.
  • He is so opportunistic that he would even disown his mother.

5. ADVERSATIVE

  • Ora sei qui da me, ma dovresti essere altrove.
  • Now you’re here with me, but you should be somewhere else.
  • Ti trovavi a Brescia; però saresti dovuto essere a Milano.
  • You were in Brescia; but you should have been in Milan.

6. COMPARATIVES

  • Era più bello di quanto si sarebbe potuto immaginare.
  • It was more beautiful than anyone could have imagined.
  • Non è come dovrebbe essere.
  • It’s not how it should be.

7. RELATED

  • Secondo lui, c’è un solo giornale che diffonderebbe notizie false: quello del partito avverso.
  • According to him, there is only one newspaper that would spread false news: that of the opposing party.
  • Sono state indicate molte persone che avrebbero avuto a che fare con i traditori.
  • Many people were indicated who would have had dealings with the traitors.

8. INCIDENTAL

  • La vita, direi l’esistenza, è fatta anche di tante delusioni.
  • Life, I would say existence, is also made up of many disappointments.
  • L’onestà, avrebbe osato sostenere l’imputato, è una parola tutta da interpretare.
  • Honesty, the accused dared to argue, is a word that needs to be interpreted.
