Tipi di avverbio 6 (avverbi interrogativi) / Types of adverb 6 (interrogative adverbs)

Interrogative adverbs are a small, essential class of invariable words used to formulate direct and indirect questions. They are called “avverbi interrogativi” because they introduce a question about the circumstances of the action the manner, place, time, quantity, or cause and they correspond directly to the core question words in English.

  • (tempo) Quando verrai? Non so quando lui verrà
  • (time) When will you come? I don’t know when he will come
  • (luogo) Dove abiti? Chissà dove abita Luigi
  • (place) Where do you live? Who knows where Luigi lives
  • (modo) Come stai? Non mi hai ancora detto come stai!
  • (manner) How are you? You still haven’t told me how you are!
  • (causa) Perché esci? Non so perché l’ho fatto.
  • (cause) Why are you going out? I don’t know why I did it.

Interrogative adverbs are fundamental tools for gathering information, expressing curiosity, and engaging in dialogue.

The primary interrogative adverbs are: come? how?, dove? where?, quando? when?, quanto? how much? ,perché? why?.

  • Dove vai? (Where are you going?)
  • Quando torni a casa nostra? (When are you coming back to our house?)
  • Come stai? (How are you?)
  • Quanto vale? (How much is it worth?)
  • Perché sei andato via? (Why did you leave?)

Come? (How?)

Inquires about the manner, way, or state in which an action occurs or a condition exists.

  • Come stai? (How are you?)
  • Come hai fatto? (How did you do it?)

Dove? (Where?)

Inquires about the place, location, or destination related to the action.

  • Dove abiti? (Where do you live?)
  • Dove vai? (Where are you going?)
  • Da dove? (From where?)
  • Verso dove? (Towards where?)

Quando? (When?)

Inquires about the time, moment, or period of an action or event.

  • Quando arriva il treno? (When does the train arrive?)
  • Quando partiamo? (When do we leave?)

Perché? (Why?)

Inquires about the cause, reason, or purpose of an action or state. It is the only one in this core set that specifically asks for motivation.

  • Perché piangi? (Why are you crying?)
  • Perché sei in ritardo? (Why are you late?)

Note: “Perché” also means “because” when answering.

Quanto? / Quanta? / Quanti? / Quante? (How much? / How many?)

Inquires about the quantity, measure, degree, or intensity. Unlike the others, it can change form to agree in gender and number with the noun it refers to (making it technically an interrogative adjective in many uses).

  1. Adverbial Use (invariable):
    • Quanto costa? (How much does it cost?)
    • Quanto studi? (How much do you study?)
  2. Adjectival Use (variable):
    • Quanti libri hai? (How many books do you have?)
    • Quanta pazienza! (How much patience!)

In subordinate clauses, these adverbs have the value of subordinating conjunctions and can:

  1. Introduce indirect questions:
    • dimmi come ti chiami (tell me your name)
    • non so quando torna (I don’t know when she’ll be back)
    • non capisco perché fai così (I don’t understand why you do this).
  2. Join two propositions, with relative value. This is the case of (Dove):
    • il centro storico della città dove lavoro (= nella quale) è considerato dall’Unesco “patrimonio dell’umanità”
    • The historic center of the city where (= in which) I work is considered a “world heritage” by UNESCO”.
