Prepositional phrases are those fixed expressions made up of several words that perform the function of preposition:
- Giocava in mezzo ai bambini.
- He played among the children.
- Io scelgono in base alle sue capacità.
- I choose based on his abilities.
Prepositional phrases can be formed by the association of:
1. Two prepositions (generally the first improper and the second proper):
(fuori da, fuori di, dietro a, insieme con, prima di, vicino a, accanto a, ecc.)

| davanti a | “in front of” (position at the front) | La statua è davanti al palazzo. (The statue is in front of the palace.) |
| sopra a (less common) sotto a | “on top of” “underneath” | Il gatto dorme sotto al letto. (The cat sleeps under the bed.) |
| vicino a | “near to,” “close to” | Abito vicino alla stazione. (I live near the station.) |
| lontano da | “far from” | È lontano da casa. (It is far from home.) |
| prima di | “before” (time/precedence) | Partiamo prima di te. (We leave before you.) |
| dopo di (before pronouns) | “after” | Vieni dopo di me. (Come after me.) |
| insieme a insieme con | “together with” | Sono uscito insieme ai miei amici. (I went out together with my friends.) |
| accanto a | “next to,” “beside” | Siediti accanto a me. (Sit next to me.) |
2. Prepositions and nouns: preposition + noun + preposition
(in mezzo a, in confronto a, a favore di, a forza di, in base a, a causa di, in cambio di, in compagnia di, ecc.)

| a forza di | “by dint of,” “through (persistent action)” | A forza di studiare, ha superato l’esame. (By dint of studying, he passed the exam.) |
| in base a | “on the basis of,” “according to” | Decideremo in base alle informazioni. (We will decide based on the information.) |
| in cambio di | “in exchange for” | L’ho aiutato in cambio di un favore. (I helped him in exchange for a favor.) |
| in compagnia di | “in the company of” | Cenò in compagnia degli amici. (He dined in the company of friends.) |
| per colpa di | “because of,” “due to the fault of” | Per colpa tua, siamo in ritardo! (Because of you, we’re late!) |
| di fronte a | “in the face of,” “faced with” | Di fronte alla difficoltà, non si arrese. (Faced with difficulty, he did not give up.) |
3. Verbs or adverbs and prepositions:
(a partire da, a prescindere da, conformemente a, indipendentemente da, diversamente da, ecc.)

| indipendentemente da | (adverb indipendentemente) “independently of,” “regardless of” | Deciderò indipendentemente da te. (I will decide independently of you.) |
