Prepositional phrases with (a) express nuanced spatial, causal, adversative, or thematic relationships that a simple preposition cannot convey.

These phrases pinpoint location with greater precision than in or su.

Adverbial phrases never change form.

These describe gradual processes, distribution, or direct contact.
- a poco a poco / a mano a mano / gradatamente: little by little, gradually.
- A poco a poco si è abituato al clima. (Little by little, he got used to the climate.)
- goccia a goccia: drop by drop.
- Somministrare il medicinale goccia a goccia. (Administer the medicine drop by drop.)
- faccia a faccia / corpo a corpo / testa a testa: face to face / hand-to-hand / head-to-head.
- Lo affrontò faccia a faccia. (He confronted him face to face.)
- Una lotta corpo a corpo. (A hand-to-hand fight.)
- porta a porta: door-to-door.

C. Fixed idiomatic phrases
These are highly idiomatic and must be learned as chunks.
