Periodo ipotetico di prima tipo [della realtà] / Hypothetical period of the first type [of reality].

The hypothetical period of reality indicates a consequence that will certainly happen.

  • The condition is certain and real.
  • The consequence is certain and necessary.

The tenses used are:

1. PRESENT > PRESENT

  • Se studi di più, questo esame lo superi di sicuro!
  • If you study more, you will pass this exam for sure!
  • Se esci subito, fai ancora in tempo.
  • If you leave now, you still have time.
  • Se mi presti la macchina, ti faccio il pieno.
  • If you lend me your car, I’ll fill it up for you.
  • Se me lo spieghi bene, riesco a capirlo.
  • If you explain it to me well, I can understand it.

2. FUTURE > FUTURE

(the hypothesis is placed in the future; the future mostly has a ”prediction” value)

  • Se mi farai questo favore, te ne sarò grata per tutta la vita.
  • If you do me this favor, I will be grateful to you for life.
  • Se mi darai istruzioni precise, le seguirò alla lettera.
  • If you give me precise instructions, I will follow them to the letter.
  • Se in un domani lui mi chiederà di aiutarlo, non saprò dirgli di no.
  • If in the future he asks me to help him, I won’t be able to say no.
  • Se verrai a trovarci, ci farai tutti felici.
  • If you come to visit us, you will make us all happy.

3. PRESENT > FUTURE

(present assumption, future consequence)

  • Se glielo chiedi, ti aiuterà certamente.
  • If you ask him, he will certainly help you.
  • Se restiamo tutti uniti, ce la faremo a superare le difficoltà.
  • If we all stick together, we will overcome the difficulties.
  • Se iniziamo subito, riusciremo a finire in tempo.
  • If we start now, we will be able to finish in time.

4. PRESENT PERFECT > PRESENT/FUTURE/ PRESENT PERFECT

  • Se non hai capito, te lo rispiego.
  • If you don’t understand, I’ll explain it to you again.
  • Se hai fatto il tuo dovere, sarai ricompensato.
  • If you have done your duty, you will be rewarded.
  • Se non lo hai potuto finire, lo finirò io.
  • If you couldn’t finish it, I will finish it.
  • Se gli hai detto la verità, lo ha sicuramente apprezzato.
  • If you told him the truth, he definitely appreciated it.

5. PRESENT/FUTURE/PRESENT PAST/FRONT FUTURE > IMPERATIVE

(The imperative of apodosis can be combined with any tense)

  • Se non puoi venire, telefonami!
  • If you can’t come, call me!
  • Se vincerai alla lotteria, non dirlo a nessuno!
  • If you win the lottery, don’t tell anyone!
  • Se hai fatto ore di straordinario, fattele pagare!
  • If you worked overtime, make them pay!
