The definite article is used in the following cases.
1. To indicate someone or something already known to the speaker and listener:
- Hai già fatto il compito di matematica?
- (Have you already done your math homework?)
- Ho presentato il motorino a Giacomo.z
- (I presented the scooter to Giacomo).
2. To indicate someone or something that has been mentioned previously:
Andrea ha conosciuto una ragazza tedesca. La ragazza si chiama Greta.
(Andrea met a German girl. The girl’s name is Greta).
Ieri per strada ho incontrato un ragazzo……il ragazzo ad un certo punto si è rivolto a me e mi ha salutato.
(Yesterday on the street I met a boy…at a certain point the boy turned to me and greeted me).
C’era una volta un re che aveva una bellissima figlia. … La figlia del re un giorno conobbe un giovane principe …
(Once upon a time there was a king who had a beautiful daughter. … The king’s daughter one day met a young prince …).
3. To indicate a class, a category, or a species (of people, animals, things):
- Il cane è il migliore amico dell’uomo.
- (The dog is man’s best friend).
- L’elefante è un animale molto longevo.
- (The elephant is a very long-lived animal).
- Il libro è per me una gran compagnia.
- (The book is great company for me).
- L’uomo è un essere dotato di spiritualità.
- (Man is a being endowed with spirituality).
4. To indicate unique things in nature:
- Il mare.
- (The sea).
- Il sole.
- (The sun).
- La luna.
- (The moon).
- La terra.
- (The earth).
5. With abstract nouns:
- Amo l’arte in tutte le sue forme.
- (I love art in all its forms).
- Mi interessano molto la pittura e la musica.
- (I am very interested in painting and music).
6. With nouns that indicate material:
- L’oro.
- (The gold).
- L’argento.
- (The silver).
- Il petrolio.
- (The oil).
- La carta.
- (The paper).
- Il burro.
- (The butter).
- Lo zucchero.
- (The sugar).
7. With distributive value:
- 130 chilometri all’ora.
- (130 kilometers per hour).
- 20 mila lire al chilo.
- (20 thousand lire per kilo).
8. With time expressions:
- Nel 1998.
- (In the 1998).
- L’anno prossimo.
- (The next year).
- La settimana scorsa.
- (The last week).
