Some consonants in Italian have specific rules; here are some of the most common ones.

1). La lettera C (the letter C)

A). The letter C + (a – o – u – h – consonant) is represented by the guttural sound [k]

4). La lettera (H) [the letter (H)]

The letter H has no sound and It is used:

  • In the voices of the verb [avere >> to have]: ho – hai – ha – hanno.
  • In several exclamations: oh! – ah! – ahi! – ahimé! – mah!
  • To indicate the guttural sound of (c) and (g) in front of (i) and (e): architetto (architect) – ghiaccio (ice).

5). La lettra (D) [the letter (D)]

For reasons of harmony in speech (but also in writing) a (d) is added in front of words that begin with (e) or (a).

  • Andiamo ad aprire / Andiamo a aprire.
  • Let’s go to open
  • Antonio ed Ermanno / Antonio e Ermanno.
  • Antonio and Ermanno
  • Studiava ed era intelligente / Studiava e era intelligente.
  • He studied and was intelligent
