Il futuro anteriore (o composto) / The future perfect (or compound).

The future perfect or compound future indicates an action prior to another expressed in the simple future.

  • Quando avrò finito, andremo a fare una passeggiata.
  • When I’m done, we’ll go for a walk.
  • Stasera potrai uscire solo dopo che avrai finito di fare i compiti.
  • Tonight you can only go out after you finish your homework.

The future perfect is often used with expressions such as:

  • Dopo che (After that)
  • Già (Already)
  • Appena (As soon as)

1. The form of the future perfect.

The future Perfect is formed with the simple future of the auxiliary Avere or Essere and the past participle of the verb.

[avere/essere of the simple future + P.P].

2. Uses of the future perfect.

The future perfect, like the simple future, can be used to express a doubt, hypothesis, perplexity, or uncertainty. (in past situation).

  • Saranno stati in dieci, credo.
  • There must have been ten of them, I think.
  • Avranno avuto fame, poverini.
  • They must have been hungry, poor things.
  • Non trovo il portafoglio, ma dove l’avrò lasciato? Mi sarà caduto o me l’avranno rubato! (Non so dove l’ho lasciato, forse mi è caduto o me l’hanno rubato).
  • I can’t find my wallet, but where did I leave it? I must have dropped it or it must have been stolen! (I don’t know where I left it, maybe I dropped it or it was stolen).

The future perfect is a tense not too frequently used; in its place, we can use:

  1. Futuro semplice (a simple future):
    • Appena terminerà [sarà terminata] la lezione, potrete fare merenda in cortile.
    • As soon as the lesson is over, you can have a snack in the courtyard
  2. Passato prossimo (a perfect past):
    • Quando abbiamo finito [avremo finito], vi telefoneremo.
    • When we’re done, we’ll call you.
  3. Finito passato (a past infinitive):
    • Dopo aver mangiato [dopo che avremo mangiato], andremo a fare un riposino.
    • After we eat, we will go for a nap.
  4. Participio passato (a past participle):
    • Finito [dopo che avrò finito] di vedere il film, passerò ad altro programma.
    • Once [after I finish] watching the film, I will move on to another program.
