As we mentioned in the previous lesson, the partitive article indicates a not well-determinate part of a large whole.

| Indicates a certain quantity of something: Un po’ di (a little pit of). | Indicates a part of the whole, a certain number of something: Alcuni/Qualche (some). |
| Vorrei dell’aranciata = vorrei un po’ di aranciata. Metti ancora dello zucchero nel latte = Metti ancora un po’ di zucchero nel latte. | Vorrei dei quaderni = vorrei alcuni quaderni o (qualche quaderno). Laura ha dei cavalli bellissimi = Laura ha alcuni cavalli bellissimi. |
Note the diffrent in these sentenses.
- Vorrei dell’acqua.
- (I would like some water).
- Vorrei una bottiglia di acqua.
- (I would like a bottle of water).
- Vorrei del vino.
- (I would like some wine).
- Vorrei una bottiglia di vino.
- (I would like a bottle of wine).
- Vorrei del pane.
- (I would like some bread).
- Vorrei un pezzo di pane.
- (I would like a piece of bread).
- Vorrei della carne.
- (I would like some meat).
- Vorrei un chilo di carne.
- (I would like a kilo of meat).
- Vorrei della pasta.
- (I would like some pasta).
- Vorrei un pacco di pasta.
- (I would like a pack of pasta).
1. Those expressions in which the partitive article is preceded by a preposition are not considered elegant. In these cases, the partitive can be replaced with: Un po’di, alcuni/qualche (a bit of, some).
Ho parlato con delgi studenti.- Ho parlato con alcuni studenti/ qualche studente.
- (I spoke to some students).
2. The singular partitive articles are rare with abstract nouns.
Ho della sete.- Ho un po’ di sete.
- (I’m a little thirsty).
Ha dell’intelligenza.- Ha una certa intelligenza.
- (He has a certain intelligence).
Possiede del facino.- Possiede abbastanza fascino.
- (It has enough charm).
However, with noun adjectives, the partitive is quite common.
- C’è del buono.
- (There is some good).
- Vedere del bello in tutto.
- (Seeing beauty in everything).
3. It is common to use the partitive article before nouns indicating parts of the body.
- Ha dei begli occhi.
- (He/she has beautiful eyes).
- Ha delle belle gambe.
- (He/she has nice legs).
- Ha dei bei capelli.
- (He/she has nice hair).
