Indefinite adjectives indicate a person or thing generically and vaguely in relation to their quantity, identity or quality.
- Poche persone leggono libri di filosofia.
- Few people read philosophy books.
- Nessun gatto ama nuotare.
- No cat likes to swim.
- Mi piace mangiare a qualsiasi ora.
- I like to eat at any time.
- Ciascun bambino riceverà il suo premio.
- Each child will receive their prize.
1. Ogni (all)
Ogni has the meaning of “tutti” (ogni studente= tutti gli studenti), a totality considered individually. It is always used with the verb in the singular. it never has the article. It is invariable.
- Ogni studente avrà il voto che si merita.
- Every student will get the grade they deserve.
- Ci ritrovavamo ogni sera allo stesso caffè.
- We met every evening at the same café.
- Ogni volta che la squadra faceva un punto, si alzavano in piedi gridando.
- Every time the team scored a point, they stood up shouting.
- L’orologio suonava ogni ora.
- The clock chimed every hour.
- Va a trovare i suoi ogni due settimane.
- Va a trovare i suoi ogni due settimane.
- Per ogni dieci studenti c’è un professore.
- For every ten students there is one professor.
- Ogni tre tavoli c’è un cameriere.
- Every three tables there is a waiter.
2. Qualunque – Qualsiasi – Qualsivoglia (any)
They have the meaning of “quale che sia (whatever it is)”, “ogni cosa possibile (everything possible)”, “ogni…possibile (every … possible)”, etc.
‘qualsivoglia‘ is less common. ‘qualsiasi‘ and ‘qualunque‘ can have a relative (concessive) value combined with the subjunctive mood. They are invariable.
- Qualunque ospite arrivi, sarà il benvenuto = Sarà il benvenuto anche se arriva ogni ospite possibile.
- Whatever guest arrives, they will be welcome = They will also be welcome if every possible guest arrives.
- Qualunque cosa tu gli abbia detto, non avrà alleviato la sua preoccupazione = anche se gli hai detto ogni cosa possibile, ciò non avrà alleviato la sua prete cupazione.
- Whatever you told him, it won’t have eased his worry = even if you told him everything possible, it won’t have eased his worry
- Domani mi potrai trovare in qualsiasi momento.
- Tomorrow you can find me at any time.
- Qualunque / qualsiasi cosa decidiate di fare, comunicatecela.
- Whatever/whatever you decide to do, let us know.
Placed after the name, they can take on a negative, derogatory meaning.
- Non mi confiderei mai con un amico qualunque / qualsiasi.
- I would never confide in just any/any friend.
- Non ha senso dargli una risposta qualsiasi / qualunque.
- There’s no point in giving him any/any answer.
- È una persona qualunque / qualsiasi.
- He is an ordinary person.
3. Qualche (Some)
Indicates an indefinite but limited quantity. Invariable.
- Inviterò qualche amico (non molti amici)
- I will invite some friends (not many friends)
- C’è qualche soldo in casa? (alcuni soldi)
- Is there any money in the house? (some money)
Other cases:
- Da qualche parte, in qualche luogo.
- Somewhere, someplace.
- Una qualche soluzione la troveremo.
- We will find some solution.
The adjective “qualche” is used as the plural of “alcuni“.
- Mi daresti alcuni fogli? (qualche foglio)
- Could you give me some papers? (a few sheets)
- Suo figlio, signora, ha fatto alcuni sbagli nel compito (qualche sbaglio)
