The conditional is the way used to express a doubt, a hypothesis, a desire for something that can only happen as a consequence of a condition (whether expressed or not):
- Elena verrebbe, se la mamma l’accompagnasse.
- Elena would come if her mother accompanied her.
- Sarebbe bello andare a fare una nuotata (sottinteso: se avessimo tempo).
- It would be nice to go for a swim (implied: if we had time).
- Vorrei andare a casa (sottinteso: se fosse possibile).
- I would like to go home (implied: if it were possible).
The conditional has two tenses:
Simple tense also called present tense (made up of only one element).
